There are basic oral care and issues that can arise in the mouth while cancer patients are undergoing treatments, and dental hygienist Jana Ray will talk to participants about these at the 1-2 p.m. program, “Oral Care During Cancer Treatments” on Tuesday, July 10 in the Blount Memorial Cancer Center conference room 1 on the center’s second floor. Light refreshments will be provided, and registrations can be made by calling 865-981-3983.

Tonight’s the regular meeting of the Survivors of Suicide support group, which is a support group for anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide. The group meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium, and more information is available by calling 865-984-4223.

There are 31 ways to celebrate this week’s observance of National Therapeutic Recreation Week, which is a time designed to enhance public awareness of therapeutic recreation programs and services, as well as expand recreation and leisure opportunities for those with disabilities. The week’s sponsor, the National Therapeutic Recreation Society, has celebrated the observance since 1984. More information, including a list of the 31 ways to celebrate the week, is available at www.nrpa.org.

On Friday, July 13 at Blount Memorial’s MorningView Village, family members of Alzheimer’s disease patients gather for the monthly meeting of the Alzheimer’s Support Group. If you’re expecting a new arrival in the next few months, join the Blount Memorial Family Birthing Center for its Family Birthing Center Tour tonight from 6:30-7:30 p.m. New parents-to-be who aren’t enrolled in a Lamaze class are encouraged to participate. All those touring will benefit from a brief discussion of selected policies and procedures. The class is free, and registrations can be made by calling 865-981-3983.

For the stork’s new arrivals that are already here, Mother Goose has set the date for her bi-monthly play date. On Wednesday, July 11, at the Blount Memorial Family Birthing Center, a group for kids 18 months to 3 years old meets from 10-11 a.m., and from 11 a.m. – noon, babies 6 weeks – 18 months old are invited to the center’s classroom on the hospital’s first floor.

The group is designed to stimulate the bond between caregivers and children up to 3 years old, as well as explore baby’s brain development. Register by calling 865-981-3983.
