The Lap-Band AP system now is available to patients at the Blount Memorial Surgical Weight Loss Center and Foothills Weight Loss Specialists. The American Society for Bariatric Surgery has designated the Surgical Weight Loss Center a Center of Excellence.
The new band, through recent research and testing, has shown superior results when compared to the previous Lap-Band, according to one of the center’s bariatric surgeons, Dr. Mark Colquitt. “The new AP band should offer greater weight loss and less risk of complications,” he said. With the Lap-Band procedure, an adjustable synthetic band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch which holds less food, making patients feel full faster and longer.
Colquitt and two other Tennessee-based bariatric surgeons are among only 14 surgeons who also have been asked to serve as advisors for the development of new products for Allergan, Inc., the manufacturer of Lap-Band system offerings. As advisors, the 14 surgeons become the first to offer new products to their patients, before they’re available to other bariatric programs and facilities.
