Is the post-holiday return to caregiving responsibilities giving you a feeling of fatigue? If so, join Blount Memorial Senior Services for its Senior Health Circle presentation today at noon in the hospital’s auditorium. Registered nurse Linda Fredrick and Senior Services coordinator and licensed clinical social worker Edward Harper present “Caregiver Fatigue,” explaining what it is and giving tips for minimizing the impact of stress on caregiver health. Statistics show, nationally, that due to a lack of care for the caregiver, the person receiving care often outlives the one providing care.

Additionally, if you are in a caregiving situation, Senior Services may be able to help identify available resources and strategies to assist you and your family. Caregiver Consultations are free, and they give caregivers the opportunity to explore possible strategies and resources at a free one-on-one consultation with a Senior Services representative. For more information about caregiving issues or education and support programs, call 865-977-5744.

If the New Year has brought you new hope for learning about surgical weight loss options, then make plans to join surgeons Dr. Mark Colquitt and Dr. Jonathan Ray for an informative Surgical Weight Loss Lecture Series presentation. Surgical and laparoscopic treatments of obesity – including gastric bypass, sleeve and banding procedures – will be discussed, along with criteria for the procedures. The free program happens on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium. Register by calling 865-977-4673.

January is National Blood Donor Month, a time that people are encouraged to donate blood or pledge to give blood, as it’s during this month that blood supplies are typically low. Locally, Medic Regional Blood Center is hosting three blood collection drives in Blount County this week. Today, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., those interested in donating blood can visit the Blount Memorial Wellness Center at Springbrook or Wal-Mart, located at 1030 Hunters Crossing Drive, which both are in Alcoa. Then, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, Medic will be in the third floor training room of the Blount County Sheriff’s Department in Maryville. For other regional donation site information, visit www.medicblood.org.

Tonight’s the regular monthly meeting of Moms Remembered, a grief support group for women who have lost their mothers through death. The free group meets tonight from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Blount Memorial Home Services and Hospice building adjacent to the hospital’s campus. For more information or to register, call 865-981-2291.

If 2009 brings an addition to your family, take part in the Early Pregnancy and Introduction to the Family Birthing Center Tour at Blount Memorial Hospital from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8. During the tour, expectant mothers and their support people can see the center and ask questions of the staff. Guests are asked to call 865-981-3983 and register by 10 a.m. the day of the program.
