Meet Our Patients

Learn how metabolic and weight loss surgery at the Blount Memorial Weight Management Center is helping East Tennesseans live healthier, more active lives.

Patient Profile 1: Milton Cooper, Blount County

Treatment: gastric bypass
Pre-surgery weight: 378 pounds
Current weight: 209
Health benefits beyond weight loss: No longer takes medication for diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol

Milton Cooper weighed more than 300 pounds and was unable to control his diabetes with daily insulin shots, medication and diet. His physician recommended gastric bypass surgery as a tool to help Cooper regain control over his weight, health and life. Two days after the procedure, Cooper was diabetes-free. His only regret, he says, is that he didn't have the surgery earlier. "I feel better than I have felt in 20 years," he adds. "It has been an amazing experience."

Patient Profile 2: Jill Mayfield, Knoxville

Treatment: gastric bypass
Pre-surgery weight: 236
Current weight: 145
Health benefits beyond weight loss: no longer takes any medication, increased mobility and energy, and relieved leg pain and severe headaches

When Jill Mayfield discovered her debilitating headaches were related to her weight, she knew she had to make a dramatic change. Mayfield suffered with severe head pain for a few years before being diagnosed with intracranial hypertension in 2007. The neurological disorder, resulting in increased pressure around the brain, is most common in young women who are obese. Her physician recommended bariatric surgery and, after researching several options, the Knoxville resident chose the Weight Management Center. "When I went to the Blount Memorial seminar and met Dr. [Mark] Colquitt, I knew this was the program for me," she explains. "Everyone was so encouraging and supportive, and they still are today. I have a second chance at life, and I am having so much fun."

Patient Profile 3: Rachel Hughes, Maryville

Treatment: gastric bypass
Pre-surgery weight: 386 pounds
Current weight: 175 pounds
Health benefits beyond weight loss: improved breathing and mobility, and increased energy

Rachel Hughes grew up with morbidly obese role models, a family tradition she did not want to continue with her daughter, Bariatric surgery helped Hughes transform her eating and exercise habits, and become a more-active parent. She and Becca ride bicycles and prepare healthy meals together. Hughes encourages other parents living with morbid obesity to consider how their weight impacts their children. She adds, "This surgery is a tool that could change your life and get you-and your children-started down a better, healthier path."

Patient Profile 4: Amanda Patty, Blount County

Treatment: gastric sleeve
Pre-surgery weight: 309
Current weight: 204
Health benefits beyond weight loss: No longer takes medication for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma or obstructive sleep apnea; reduced thyroid medication in half; no longer needs oxygen; eliminated lower back pain

Amanda Patty knew she had to lose weight for her health and quality of life, but fatigue, severe lower back pain and shortness of breath made exercise impossible. She turned to the Weight Management Center for help and, based on her specific health issues, bariatric surgeon Dr. Mark Colquitt recommended the gastric sleeve procedure. The results, says Patty, far exceeded her expectations. "I feel like I am living my life for the first time in a very long time," she explains. "With the medical problems that I had, I knew that I was getting progressively worse. I am absolutely thrilled with where I am right now."
