Blount Memorial Breast Health Center

State-of-the-art diagnostics in a comfortable, welcoming environment

Conveniently located on the main campus of Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tenn., the Blount Memorial Breast Health Center makes it easy for women to get the breast and bone density screening and diagnostic tests needed for disease prevention, detection and treatment. Our board-certified, FDA-accredited radiologists, registered nurses, registered ultrasonographer and other professional staff are specially trained to perform and interpret a variety of tests onsite, including:

Screening and diagnostic digital mammography, which increases patient comfort, produce faster results and provide physicians with highly detailed images to use in the diagnosis. The average screening exam time can be reduced to 10 to 15 minutes, depending on other tests required.

Computerized mammography, which allows our onsite radiologists to view your mammograms and other diagnostic studies. The detailed computerized images help physicians detect cancers at an earlier, treatable stage.

Breast ultrasound, which is used to evaluate palpable and mammographic abnormalities. Two private ultrasound rooms are located in the center.

Stereotactic breast biopsies, which use a special computer to guide a needle to an abnormality seen through mammography. A large percentage of these abnormalities are benign and present no health risks. This biopsy is a non-invasive, accurate way to obtain the tissue sample required for diagnosis.

Ultrasound-guided biopsies, which are performed when the abnormal area in the breast is too small to be felt, making it difficult to locate the lesion by hand. The ultrasound imaging helps guide the radiologist’s instruments to the site of the abnormal growth. Ultrasound guidance is used in four biopsy procedures:

  • fine needle aspiration (FNA), which uses a very small needle to extract fluid or cells from the abnormal area
  • core needle (CN), which uses a large hollow needle to remove one sample of breast tissue per insertion
  • vacuum-assisted device (VAD), which uses a vacuum-powered instrument to collect multiple tissue samples during one needle insertion

Bone densitometry, which is used to measure bone density in the spine and hip to look for evidence of osteoporosis. This simple and painless scan takes only five minutes and can be scheduled for the same day as mammography for patient convenience.

Physical breast exams, which are conducted by a registered nurse, when needed.
